Maps

Over 700 local maps are preserved in the Society's climate-controlled vault. They range from Robert Morris Copeland's design for The Heights, or The Prospect as it was called in 1872, to maps created by Marvin Shiebler to detemine ownership of land throughout the Island from 1652 to 1933. There are early tax maps with property owners written in for a variety of periods throughout the 20th Century. The above map is representative of many intriguing maps. It shows the design for the mall in the Town Center. On the back it says, "Garden Club voted to plant. c. 1947."It was drawn by Florence B. Baker, Landscape Architect.
